About Cape Town
Cape Town, also known as the “Mother City”, is a multicultural and cosmopolitan centre in South Africa and it often features amongst the top must-visit tourist destinations in the World. Besides its remarkable cultural and historical significance, its world-class restaurants, and its pleasant climate, Cape Town is truly unique because of its location: nested between two oceans and the towering slopes of Table Mountain, and surrounded by scenic winelands. With direct flights from several major international air traffic hubs, it is easy and affordable to reach.
Cape Town has a Mediterranean climate, with mild, moderately wet winters and dry, warm summers. The summer months in Cape Town stretch from December through to March, while cooler weather sets in from April through to November. In April average high temperatures are around 23°C (72°F). The evenings in Cape Town in April are cooler, and the average low temperature drops to 12°C (54°F). Meanwhile, pleasant mornings and evenings are perfect for dining al fresco and exploring the outdoor attractions around Cape Town.
Citizens of a large number of countries enjoy visa-free travel to South Africa and only need a valid passport. Other visitors may need to apply for a visa before travelling and are encouraged to check with their local South African embassy or consulate. A list is provided below for convenience, but it is subject to change without notice. Visa letters of invitation will be provided to attendees requiring one.
Visitors travelling with children are advised to consult and comply with the regulations for minors travelling through South African ports of entry.
Important: while there is no risk of yellow fever in South Africa, a proof of yellow fever vaccination is required to enter the country only if arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever. A list provided below, but attendees are advised to check with their travel agent.
Cape Town and most of South Africa are malaria risk-free areas. Malaria is confined only to the north-eastern parts of the country (the Lowveld of Mpumalanga and Limpopo and on the Maputaland coast of KwaZulu-Natal) and prophylaxis should be considered only if visiting these areas.
Currency, credit cards and shopping
The South African Rand (ZAR) is the local currency. All major credit cards are accepted throughout South Africa. Foreign exchange can be done at the airport as well as at all major hotels and a passport will be required for ALL forex transactions. Alternatively cash can be withdrawn using foreign bank cards (check with your local bank or notify them of your trip to South Africa) at most ATMs (there are 2 located at the Century City Conference Centre and Hotel – ABSA and Standard Bank). Notes come in denominations of R10, R20, R50, R100 and R200; and coins come in 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, R1, R2 and R5. There are two R5 coins in circulation, both of which are legal currency. All transactions are rounded down to the nearest 5c.
Foreigners can claim sales tax refunds and should ask salesmen to fill out a tax refund form when purchasing any goods.
The voltage throughout South Africa is 220V/50hz. Most plugs are 15 amp 3-prong or 5 amp 2-prong, in both cases with round pins. If you’re bringing anything electrical, bring an adapter. Most hotels have 110 volt outlets for electric shavers and appliances. Adaptors can be bought at the airport on your arrival, and may be available at your hotel.
Visitor to South Africa are often warned about safety. In Cape Town as anywhere else in the world, crime is strongly related to poverty and mostly affects the poorest areas, which are seldom visited by tourists. Visitors are advised to be street-smart and take some basic precautions to make their trip safe and enjoyable. Some general travel tips can be found in the link below
